Medical Device CNC Machining Capabilities
Materials, tolerances and secondary processes available through the vetted Vietnamese shops we match your RFQ to. Every value below is a capability window, confirmed against your drawing before you place an order.
Medical-grade materials
Material is purchased with mill certificates traceable to heat number and stored with lot identification. Specify the standard on your drawing (for example ASTM F136 for Ti-6Al-4V ELI) and the certificate is checked against it at goods receipt. Full grade list including CoCr, UHMWPE and PEI: materials; part types by device: applications.
Ti Grade 5
Ti-6Al-4V to ASTM F136 when specified. Implants, surgical instruments, dental abutments.
Ti Grade 2
Commercially pure titanium (ASTM F67). Non-load-bearing implants and housings.
SS 316L
Implant-grade stainless. Electropolished and passivated per ASTM A967.
SS 17-4 PH
Surgical instrument bodies, hardenable to the required HRC range.
PEEK
Medical PEEK and PEEK-CF. Spinal cages, instrument handles, wear parts.
POM / PTFE
Diagnostic equipment housings, fluid-handling components, valve seats.
| Material | Typical standard on the drawing | Typical medical use | Machining notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Grade 23 / Grade 5) | ASTM F136 | Bone screws, trial components, abutments | Low heat conductivity; sharp tools, high-pressure coolant, controlled chip load |
| CP titanium Grade 2 | ASTM F67 | Housings, non-load-bearing parts | Gummy; burr control on thin walls |
| Stainless 316L | ASTM F138 / A276 as specified | Instrument components, cases, fittings | Work hardens; passivation or electropolish after machining |
| Stainless 17-4 PH | ASTM A564, condition per drawing | Instrument bodies, drivers, guides | Machined in condition A or aged; hardness checked per lot |
| PEEK / PEEK-CF | Medical grade per supplier datasheet | Trials, handles, wear parts | Annealed stock, sharp tools, no coolant contamination |
| POM / PTFE | Grade per drawing | Diagnostic housings, valve seats, manifolds | Stress relief and thermal stability on thin sections |
Tolerance and surface finish window
5-axis milling and turning centres with CMM verification. Tight tolerances cost machine time and inspection time, so call them only where the function of the part needs them.
| Linear (best) | ±0.005 mm |
| Linear (typical) | ±0.01 mm |
| Bore tolerance | H6 |
| Shaft tolerance | h5 |
| IT grade | IT5 |
| Surface roughness Ra (best) | 0.8 µm |
| Surface roughness Ra (typical) | 1.6 µm |
| GD&T | Flatness, profile, runout, concentricity, perpendicularity |
| Inspection | CMM, optical comparator, height gauge. FAI included |
| Secondary processes | Passivation, electropolish, anodizing Type II/III, laser marking |
Secondary processes
Finishing is part of the quote, with process certificates issued per lot. If the shop subcontracts a process, the subcontractor is named so it can be listed in your supplier controls.
| Process | Applies to | Document you receive |
|---|---|---|
| Passivation per ASTM A967 | 316L, 17-4 PH | Process certificate per lot |
| Electropolish | 316L stainless | Process certificate, Ra check if specified |
| Anodizing Type II / Type III | Titanium color anodize, aluminum fixtures and cases | Process certificate, color reference |
| Laser marking | Metals and PEEK | Marking content per your drawing (UDI content is decided by you) |
| Bead blast / tumbling / deburr | All metals | Visual standard agreed at FAI |
Component types
Surgical instruments
Forceps, retractors, drivers, drill guides, cutting blocks. 17-4 PH and 316L bodies with crisp edges, controlled radii and surgical-grade finish requirements.
Orthopedic components
Bone screws, plate trial components, instrument cases, fixation hardware. Ti Grade 5 from ASTM F136 stock with full lot traceability for your regulatory file.
Dental & diagnostic
Dental abutments, scanner housings, fluid-handling manifolds, optical mounts. Mixed-material assemblies welcome: Ti, SS and PEEK in the same bill of materials.
Device classification, biocompatibility testing (ISO 10993), cleaning and sterilization validation and regulatory submissions stay with the device maker. The shop machines to your drawing; this service sources and coordinates.
Capability questions
Can the shops hold ±0.005 mm on every feature?
No shop should promise that. ±0.005 mm is the best linear tolerance on suitable features machined on 5-axis equipment; ±0.01 mm is the typical window. Put tight tolerances only where function needs them and we confirm feasibility for each characteristic before quoting.
Do you machine implant-grade titanium to ASTM F136?
Shops buy Ti-6Al-4V ELI bar with mill certificates stating ASTM F136 when your drawing calls for it. The certificate travels with the lot so you can file it with your device records. Whether a part is an implant, and what testing it needs, is decided by you as the device maker.
Which finishing processes are available?
Passivation per ASTM A967, electropolish for 316L, anodizing Type II and Type III, bead blasting and laser marking. Process certificates are issued per lot. If a finish is subcontracted by the shop, the subcontractor is named in the quote.
What part sizes fit?
Small to medium precision components: screws and pins a few millimetres long up to instrument bodies, housings and cases a few hundred millimetres long. Large weldments, castings and sheet metal are not a fit for this service.
